Services of The STAR Family Center

 

Direct Services

Bicycles – providing used bicycles for homeless people to travel to and from work.

Bus passes – for homeless people who have recurring medical appointments.

Documents - Obtaining critical documents for homeless people that have been lost or destroyed – birth certificates, social security cards, and identification cards. This improves the chances of obtaining work.

Haircuts – provided by volunteers, allows homeless people to keep up their appearance and prepare for job interviews.

Medical services – Provided in partnership with Halifax Medical Center, a RN is present full-time and provides medical services and referrals when necessary. The services include wound care, treatment of injuries and illnesses and fast-track referral for more serious cases.

Mental Health Services – Provided in Partnership with SMA and Haven, Helping individuals with addiction and psychological problems have  better life.

Internet access – for job searching

Laundry and showers

Notary services

SNAP Food Assistance - Completing SNAP applications to qualify for food assistance.

Prescription assistance – for homeless people unable to purchase prescription medicine.

Telephone usage for making interview appointments and being in touch with family.


Bridge of Hope

Daily noon meal for general homeless population.
All meals for residents of the STAR Family Shelter.

 

STAR Family Shelter

24 rooms/94 bed spaces.
For families with children.
Provides up to six months of shelter for homeless families to get on their feet.
Day care provided for children so parents can seek work.
Tutoring provided for children in shelter’s media center.
Classes provided to families on finance and family dynamics.
