‘]Below are a few pictures from the event that had record breaking revenue this year! We are glad to say that the community supported us in full force and things went really well. One of our speakers, Simone Bob-Semple, a former resident of the shelter told her story of, as a single mother, climbing out of homelessness. She is now back on her feet, in a home and entering the Police Academy. She praised the work of HUM.
This work could only be done with the generosity of people like Angie Forest, who at the Blue Diamond was awarded our first annual Dr. Allen H. Nejat Community Philanthropy Award. This award was given on behalf of a donor, who upon his death, gave the single largest gift Halifax Urban Ministries has ever received. Angie Forest was celebrated for donating $100,000 to Hope Place last year. We also awarded Halifax Health the Corporate Social Responsibility Award for their continued work in the community to assist those who are indigent and homeless.
The John C. Allen, Jr., Humanitarian Award went to Bill Turner for his dedication and many years of serving the community. He has served Halifax Urban Ministries since 201 with two terms as Chairman and two terms as Treasurer. He has also served on the Boards of the Coalition for the Homeless and the Commission on Homelessness. Since joining HUM he has overseen the implementation of the “Bridge of Hope Hot Meal Program” and was Chairman of the HUM Merger Team which resulted in the consolidation of HUM with the Homeless Assistance Corp. STAR Center. John C. Allen, Jr.’s widow Debbie Allen was sick and unable to attend this Blue Diamond but said she really hated missing this event because out of all the recipients of this award, Mr. Turner best exemplified the person that best portrays the great humanitarian qualities we saw in the late John C Allen Jr. She said that John truly loved Mr. Turner and thought the world of him.
Get involved next spring if you missed it this year, it’s the best gala in town and helps the neediest in the community.
Our 7th Annual – Blue Diamond Celebration was held at Pelican Bay Country Club on Saturday, April 30th, 2016.
At the 7th Annual Blue Diamond Celebration Halifax Urban Ministries honored their supporters with a gala reception, music and gourmet dinner. The John C. Hosseini, Senior VP, ICI Homes. The Keynote speaker was Jayson Meyers, Founder and CEO of Synergy Billing and the 2016 Young Professional of the Year.
