Halifax Urban Ministries was founded in 1980 by the Halifax Area Ministrerial Assocation representing the faith community of the greater Halifax Area. From its beginning it has served as a direct extension of local faith communities by developing community outreach programs. Since 1990 HUM has taken a leadership role in developing services for and advocating for the homeless and poor of our community. Our prime mission is to prevent homelessness through the distribution of food and emergency financial support.
HUM is also an Outreach Ministry of the Florida Conference of the United Methodist Church. HUM is also a United Way of Volusia/Flagler agency. In addition HUM also enjoys direct support from a broad spectrum of individuals, organizations and faith based groups. HUM has discovered that in serving the poorest of the poor great joy and unity can be experienced by all people of faith.
HUM is also recognized within the wider community as a consistent provider of emergency services. These services such as emergency utility payments, temporary housing and "return home" travel assistance are aimed at keeping those at risk out of the homeless community. HUM is a United Way agency and works closely with the Homeless Assistance Corp- Star Center, The Department of Children and Families, Volusia County Human Services and with a strong relationship with the Volusia/Flagler County Coalition for the Homeless.
